50th Anniversary of Mary Queen of Heaven Parish

September 2008

Did you know.... that the land Mary Queen of Heaven is built on was used for 'Victory Gardens', and then community gardens, before it was purchased for the parish?

In 1958, when Mary Queen of Heaven was opened as a parish:

Father Michael Merkt was 4 years old.
Archbishop Timothy Dolan was 8 years old.
Pope Benedict XVI was 31 years old.
Jesus would have been 1,958 years old in His human form.
Bernie and Ann Klamecki were married, July 19th, 1958 (happy 50th, you lovebirds)
We had 2 kinds of Mass; the High Mass, and the Low Mass.
United States Postal stamps cost 4 cents.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States.
Richard Nixon was Vice President
Gasoline cost 30 cents a gallon
The minimum wage was $1.00 an hour
The Edsel convertible was introduced
Elvis Presley entered the U.S. Army
Chuck and Rita's Market on 68th & Lincoln was the place to go for prime meats
There were 'milkmen' who delivered your milk right to your door twice a week.
Some houses still had Coal furnaces, and the coal was delivered and dumped into a shoot at the front of the house, into the coal bin in the basement.  Then there were 'ash boxes' at the alley, and ashmen came and collected the ashes from the furnaces.
We had rotary dial telephones.  Push button phones weren't invented yet.
We only had AM radio stations.  FM and stereo weren't invented yet.
There were no microwaves, internet, cell phones, CDs, DVDs, VCRs, or Cable TV.
We only received 4 television channels; 4, 6, 12, and 18, and they were all in black and white, and fuzzy.
Lawrence Welk, Sing Along with Mitch, Captain Kangaroo, Sky King, and the Lone Ranger were popular shows.
State Fair Park had permanent rides.  My favorites were the airplanes on cables, and the Old Mill,  with real water.
There was a small lake between Greenfield Park and Highway 100.
We always knew we were getting close to home when we could see the Channel 4 lighted tower in the night skyline.

We are also looking for artifacts and pictures of the early years to use for the anniversary.
Call the parish office, if you have any interesting artifacts, or pictures from the early years of Mary Queen of Heaven,  414-328-5566
